NWAS Arlington VA

Meeting Date:   06/23-26/2016washington-dc-fireworks

Meeting location:  Arlington Virginia, Westin Arlington Gateway Hotel

Meeting presented by:   NWAS

Meeting strengths / interesting topics & speakers:    This meeting lived up to the high standard set by NWAS.   The variety of speakers (both CRNA and MD) as well as the broad spectrum of topics held my interest for the entire 4 days.    This meeting offered more credits than most meetings and was done around noon every day.

I found both the hotel and the DC area to be friendly.  I had my family with me and there was no shortage of things to see and do.  My teen aged kids especially enjoyed the Smithsonian museums.   Getting around town was easy.  If we return to DC we will rent bikes  and enjoy the bike path to Mt Vernon along the river.

All in all, it was a good meeting and a great location.

Meeting location:  Hilton Head Island, SC

Meeting presented by:   NAFA

Meeting strengths / interesting topics & speakers:    This meeting had relevant and dynamic speakers. None of these speakers spoke down to us or seemed more interested in hearing their own own presentation versus actually imparting usable information. Additionally, several speakers used video simulation to illustrate case concepts. The regional lecture included live demo with video simulcast along side of the sonography. It was an excellent teaching and demonstration adjunct. Even mundane topics that, on paper, seemed like basic review (ECG recognition and management), were made interesting by the delivery and case demonstrations (video VS simulation with input from real cases).

Suggested improvements:   Add another day, I really enjoyed it.

Overall value for the money:   Excellent value. Great location.

Meeting Review: Pennsylvania ANA State Meeting

Meeting Date:   05/03/2013

Meeting location:  Hershey PA

Meeting presented by:   PANA

Meeting strengths / interesting topics & speakers:

This meeting was an exceptional offering and probably one of the best State meetings in the country. The meeting was held at the Hershey Hotel in Hershey PA. (the sweetest city in America). The hotel was historic located on a hillside and having great gardens. The Pennsylvania Assn of Nurse Anesthetist selected top notch CRNA speakers and also had concurrent sessions with ACLS, PALS and an Ultrasound workshop. Offering 20 CEUs during a weekend State meeting exceeds expectations.

Suggested improvements:

None. You guys have it together

Overall value for the money:

Exceptional value. This was as good or better than most of the commercial meetings. If the word gets out, this could rival the AANA National meeting as the premier meeting of the year.

Meeting Review: AANA Mid Year Assembly

Meeting reviewed by HP, CRNA, Texas

Meeting Date:  04/14/2013

Meeting location:  Arlington, VA / Washington, D.C.

Meeting presented by:  AANA

Meeting strengths / interesting topics & speakers:

Every year in April, AANA have their annual Mid-Year Assembly (MYA) in Washington D.C. I’ve had the privilege of attending MYA last year as a student and made a promise to myself and our profession that I will continue to be there every year! Experiencing the Capitol visits first-hand and seeing those in action to protect our profession — I believe whole-heartedly this is the most important AANA meeting! So what did we do??? For the “first-timers” at the nation’s Capitol, Sunday – Tuesday are full of featured speakers on prepping you on how to speak to legislators, what to expect at the Capitol, issues our profession is facing, and many more. Also, you break out to your region and speak specifically on your issues within the region. Capitol visits are scheduled on Tuesday and Wednesday. In the great state of Texas, we have 38 legislators. Out of the 38, we had 29 appointments (ladies, make sure you bring an extra pair of comfy shoes because there is a lot of walking in those stylish high heels otherwise!). The appointments were coordinated via our FDP – Jessica Appel. Most of the time you meet with the Congressman(woman) health liaison aid for about 15 minutes. You talk to them about the current issues pertaining to our profession — nondiscrimination language, SRNA education funds, etc. AANA have prepared folders to leave with them so they can review the individual topics discussed. Feel free to contact me at hpham827@hotmail.com for more information!

Overall value for the money:

Pros: 1. protecting our profession; 2. networking; 3. Cherry Blossom Festival; 4. Literally endless monuments and museums to go to; 5. Great place to bring your family

Cons: Very easy to get lost – I would suggest you hooking-up with someone who has been there before to “learn” the subway system.

Meeting location:  Las Vegas

Meeting presented by:  Difficult Airway

Meeting strengths / interesting topics & speakers

This was a three day conference concentrating on the difficult airway. There was a total of approx 3 hours of lecture and the rest was hands on with some case studies. Overall, very informative review of how to handle difficult airway. Really enjoyed the different case studies. Got lots of practice driving the scope with AFOI and pediatric airway. The days were long however and this is not the kind of conference where one can come and go as you please. This was also a meeting with MDA’s, CRNA’s, AA’s, ER docs.
This meeting was at Planet Hollywood resort and casino. The facilities were nice but the casino itself has a very young party vibe which didn’t fit my personal style. Overall though, very good. Good simulation and presentation of different ways to approach the difficult airway.

Suggested improvements:  The boxed lunch on the first day was awful. The breakfast was decent. The days were long- not a lot of time for fun after the long days if you wanted to be back early for the next day.

Overall value for the money:  We got a total of 21 hrs for about $850. That’s pretty on par for cost of other conferences. I think the value was good though because they did provide simulation and scopes, surgical airways, etc.

Meeting Review: Frank Moya, Orlando

The conference provided a sound foundation of anesthetic knowledge related to obstetric anesthesia. It served both as a review of principles and a presentation of new ideas. The faculty was well versed and knowledgeable.

Meeting Date:  11/25/2012

Meeting location:  Disney World

Meeting presented by:   NAFA

Meeting strengths / interesting topics & speakers:

Overall, the meeting was very good. It was a great value for the money. The location was fantastic as well as the time of year as WDW wasn’t too busy right after Thanksgiving. The meeting facilities were nice and the breakfast was hot. Most of the topics were taught by CRNA’s and had a great diversity to include- politics, pedi, OB, etc. They also started earlier in the morning to allow extra CE’s and went till 1 pm to allow time for family.

Suggested improvements:  None.

Overall value for the money:

They had two early bird sessions for an extra 2 CEU and also it is affiliated with students so they allowed students to put up their posters and we can get an extra CE for commenting on posters. Overall- 23 CE’s for $550. By far the best value as far as CE for money. Plus the meeting rate for the resort was about a 1/3 of what somebody would have to pay regularly. The resort was very nice.

Make the Most of the AANA Meeting in San Francisco

Boston, Seattle, San Francisco, Honolulu, Jackson Hole, San Antonio…there are some amazing destinations for anesthesia meetings right here in the USA. Most of the venues are places where there is a long list of thing s to see and do. And all of the destinations provide plenty of opportunities for you to stay active.

Run For Fun

AANA’s annual meeting has been offering a 5-K fun run for just under a decade. It’s an easy 3.1 mile course along the city’s most scenic route with shuttle service provided start and finish. Runners, walkers, strollers (those are the people who stayed up late the night before) are all welcome and you’re the celebrity. Beautiful surroundings, beautiful celebs, and a free t-shirt as beautiful as t-shirts get, make all that exercise a beautiful bonus. Sometimes the local ANA offers early morning fitness classes at the host hotel with leadership provided by CRNA’s who apparently enjoy waking people up as much as putting them to sleep. Click here for the AANA wellness run in San Francisco

Take Your Bands

Exercise bands are almost as easy to use as they are to pack. You can do a complete work-out in your hotel room, in the hotel gym, in a park, at the beach or looking out over the harbor in Seattle or Boston. All you need is two or three bands, a doorjamb, railing or a pole to anchor them, a little backpack to carry them, or a waist small enough to tie them around your middle. With access to cool water and a hotel-sized washcloth, aka sweat rag, you’re good to go. Bands weigh less than an I-pad and they pack flatter than a ten-dollar bill.

Rent A Bike

One of the best ways to see your city and get some great exercise at the same time is to rent a bike. Google “bicycle tours in Vancouver” or “rent a bicycle in Austin” and refine the search from there. Be sure to use the word bicycle because otherwise you’ll end up with Harley Suzuki as your travel companion, which might be a blast, but you won’t get much exercise unless you fall off and have to walk back. You may be able to get a private, guided bicycle tour – more money, of course, but if you like to be at the head of the class asking questions, money talks and the expense will pay off. Click here to learn about bike rental in San Francisco.

Many cities have initiated bike-share programs. This service goes by a variety of names – like Q-bikes in Portland, B-cycle in San Antonio, or simply Bike-share in Boston – and features a fleet of bicycles that anyone can use. Just swipe your credit card at the vertical terminal, release one of many bikes from its locked stall, then ride it on marked cycling routes throughout the city, or directly to a destination. Parking stalls and routes are indicated on maps at each bike installation so you won’t get lost. Each time you stop to sight-see near a bike-share stall, just slide the bike into a rack, it locks automatically, and very shortly it will become someone else’s exercise partner. The beauty of the service is that it generally doesn’t require a helmet. One of the drawbacks of the service is that it generally doesn’t require a helmet… AND if you have to wait for a bike to become available when you’re in Brooklyn, you could be late for cocktails in the Bronx. Click here to learn about community bike share in San Francisco.

Walk

If you didn’t download a city map and a printable walking tour before leaving town for your meeting, you can ask your hotel concierge to highlight the best walking destinations on a brochure and outline some routes for you. Check things off on your brochure as you go so you don’t miss the major attractions, and don’t be afraid to get off the beaten path. Make note of noteworthy and eccentric establishments as your cabbie whisks you through the city from the airport, then go back and find them on your feet. You’ll run into the best coffee art cafes, the most interesting old houses, and charming little corner stores that you won’t find on Tourist Avenue. You may burn enough calories to almost justify the mouth-watering apple fritter you found at Dave’s Sugar Shack not to mention the energy you’ll have the rest of the day just from staying on your toes. If Rick Steves or Lonely Planet has published a travel guide for the city you’re visiting, it’ll be a quality purchase, and when it rains, you can walk the halls, climb stairs between 2nd and 12th, or go to the hotel fitness club. Remember to pack your Nike’s and your fitness duds so you can avoid blisters and excuses. Click here to learn about walking tours in San Francisco.

Go to The Fitness Club

One of the criteria for selecting a hotel is the quality of the fitness club. Every large hotel in a large city has a fitness center and some of them have glitz galore. The Omni in San Diego, the Sheraton in Seattle, the Sheraton in Boston, even the Holiday Inn in Columbia, MO all have exceptional facilities for working out. Check online or talk to the actual hotel desk staff before you reserve your room and ask about these items: Cardio equipment(treadmills, elliptical trainers, lifecycles, walking tracks); strength-training equipment(training circuit, free weights, vertical bands stations); abs room or abs corner (mats, fitballs, body bars, medicine balls); and towel service as well as a decent-sized pool. Gym-rats are going to get to the facility early, so go really early or go a bit late, but get going.

Your anesthesia meeting is a place to learn more about your ever-changing industry but it’s also a place to have fun with old friends and to make news ones, a place to experience a new city in a new way. Hike Aspen Mountain, jog the stairs next to the San Diego Convention Center, power walk the promenade while cruising between glaciers in Alaska, cycle from Fenway Park to The Old South Church. You won’t be putting anyone to sleep or trying to stay awake for one whole week. Go make the most of it!

You can visit Liz at www.bdyfrm.com and learn more about her Traveling Bands comprehensive work-out indoors or out, and how to gain access to the Bands In the Park mobile browser. Read motivational, entertaining Lizlines every weekday including the weekly original Lizlimerick.

Meeting Date:  4/22/2012

Location:  Turks and Caicos

Strengths of meeting:  Interesting topics and speakers.  Beautiful location, great beaches, great for scuba and snorkeling

Suggestions:  No suggestions for improving the meeting.   The hotel was all inclusive with several dining options.  The food was not good and the service was not up to par for the price.

Overall value for the money:  Overpriced resort

Meeting Review: NWAS Philadelphia

Meeting Date:  May 24-27, 2012

Quality of Meeting:  Overall excellent.  The speakers were very good and the topics were relevant to clinical practice.   Objectives were met for each of the topics presented.  I did not attend the hand’s on ultrasound workshop but was told that it was very good also.  I especially enjoyed the topics presented by Dr. Murphy.  He was well informed and interacted with the audience

Quality of location:  Again, excellent.  The host hotel was nice and located in Central Downtown.  There were many good restaurants close to the hotel.  Philadelphia had many historic sites as well as museums.  I was pleasantly surprised at all the murals covering walls in the downtown area.  It was an easy area to keep active by walking and biking.  I especially enjoyed a bike ride along the trail by the river.

Value for the money:  Excellent.  NWAS puts on a lot of meetings and have developed a quality faculty.  They seek sites that are great getaway locations.  I will attend another NWAS meeting next year.

Meeting Review: Texas Association of Nurse Anesthetists

Who says you have to go to a big National meeting to obtain quality continuing education?  The Texas Association of Nurse Anesthetists once again has done it right.  The Texas Association Spring Meeting was held February 17-19 at the Waterfront Marriott in The Woodlands Texas.

The meeting location was a newly developed area with shopping restaurants and movies within easy walking distance.  The Hotel was first class and offered a group rate to those attending the meeting.

Speakers were exceptional.  All were extremely knowledgible and the topics were relevant to clinical practice.   The meeting room was comfortable.  The lunch provided on Friday was better than most food served at meetings.

All things considered, this State meeting was exceptional value for the money.  The Fall Texas Association meeting will be September 21-23 in San Antonio, Texas.  Mark your calendar.

If you attended this or any other Texas meeting, leave a comment.

Northwest Anesthesia Seminars, Waikiki meeting

Overall, a great meeting in a great location. The theme for the meeting was trauma and the speakers were knowledgible. There were excellent reviews of mechanisms of trauma as well as airway management and fluid replacement. The review of the massive transfusion protocol, including the type and volume of fluid to be given, was informative. I was satisfied with the meeting and would return to Waikiki for another meeting.
